Interesting handmade products made from straw

Pho Trach village in Phong Binh commune, Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province has hundreds of years of experience in the industry of weaving - a profession with products made from straw (dried Lepironia articulata grass).

Pho Trach is a village famous for it's profession of weaving straw, which is nearly a hundred years old from one generation to another. This profession has appeared since the establishment of the village until now, so it is not only a job for living but it has become a proud tradition of the people here.

The process of growing Lepironia articulata grass and then coming to the harvest season is about February. The leaves of Lepironia articulata are dried, selected  and then pounded in the mortar to make straws. Each straw is then stripped out to many strings, the main material for making handicraft products such as straw bag, straw hat, straw box, straw mat....

Besides main product - straw cushion, now Pho Trach village has many new designs suitable for modern life such as paper boxes, night lamps, fashion bags, containers, baskets for garbage, seat cushions, hats, key rings, souvenir, ... Especially including the set of Cuu Dinh, Hue Citadel, a set of 12 animals and many unique decorative lamps combining pottery products and straw.

In order to create new products, it requires weavers have to have skillful, flexible hands and meticulous creativity in each stage because the products are difficult to implement. For example, weaving a rooster or a train, each detail is divided into many parts including: block making, paper cutting, cushioning, coloring, creating a highlight ... Therefore, even if only one product is made, it might take 1 day to complete.
